Katherine Tinsley (59) died Tuesday, June 6 from injuries sustained in an auto accident. Katherine earned her B.A. ('79) from Indiana University Bloomington and a M.A. from University College in London. She completed a Ph.D. in history from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She held positions at SUNY-Fredonia and Horace Mann high school in New York city prior to taking her position at Manchester University. After twenty-six years of teaching, she retired this May to pursue her interests in research.

Throughout her time at Manchester she worked with international students as their academic advisor. In addition she took students on trips to see other cities such as Chicago, St. Louis, and Cleveland. For years she organized a community pot luck to provide a Sunday evening meal for the students.

Outside of her academic pursuits, she baked and cooked trying cuisines from around the world. She traveled a good deal and frequently returned to New York city.

One of her passions was attending plays. In her life she saw hundreds of theatrical performances.

Caring for family, friends, students, and colleagues was a theme to her life. She touched many lives, and all of us have lost a special person.

Survivors: Husband, Matt Hendryx; father, Dr. Walter Tinsley; mother, Jean Tinsley; siblings, Martha Boon; Steve Tinsley; and two nieces and a nephew. The memorial service will be held in the Switzer Center on the Manchester University campus in North Manchester, Indiana at 2:30, Saturday, June 24.
